Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee

The Story of a City, Told Within Its Own Walls

In the heart of one of the best-preserved historic towns in the Netherlands, the Stadhuismuseum occupies a building that is itself the most remarkable object in its collection. The former city hall of Zierikzee, a monumental structure nearly 470 years old, once served as the beating heart of civic life in this extraordinary Zeeland town, housing not only the municipal government but also the law courts, the water authority, the meat market, and the city scales. Walking through its rooms today is to walk through the full sweep of a city’s history, layer by layer, century by century.

Zierikzee was once one of the most prosperous and influential trading cities in the Netherlands, its harbour at the centre of a thriving European trade in salt and madder, the plant-based dye that coloured the textiles of a continent. The pride and fame of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, the city accumulated wealth, art, and ambition in equal measure — and the museum’s collection reflects all three. Ship models, ancient painted maps of Schouwen and Duiveland, archaeological finds, silverware, portraits, and a rich gathering of Dutch and Flemish paintings from the period 1350 to 1750 all find their place here, alongside curiosities that have been surprising visitors for generations.

A Building That Rewards Slow Exploration

A visit to the Stadhuismuseum is as much about the architecture as it is about the collection. A historic spiral staircase winds through the building past changing exhibitions to the council chamber, where the city’s governors once deliberated over its fate. The roof structure above is extraordinary, a medieval timber construction that stops you in your tracks. On the upper floors, windows look out over the rooftops of a town centre so perfectly preserved it seems barely touched by the modern world.

The museum also provides access to the Gravensteen, the oldest prison in Zeeland and perhaps the best-kept secret in Zierikzee, a former county residence and administrative centre whose cells still bear the traces of centuries of confinement. Visitors can pick up an iPad at the entrance for additional context throughout the visit, and the museum’s programme of rotating temporary exhibitions, including a celebrated series dedicated to masters of seventeenth-century Zeeland painting, ensures that every return visit holds something new.
