The story of Haarlem

Haarlem is Frans Hals's city. He worked here for almost his whole life and is buried in the Great Church. Among the canals, almshouse courtyards and narrow streets you can still sense the wealthy Golden Age town.

For museum lovers, Haarlem is a surprisingly complete city. You look at Frans Hals's civic guard portraits in a former old men's almshouse, then stroll to Teylers, where fossils, instruments and drawings still sit in their original cabinets. Everything is close together: from the Grote Markt you reach every museum within ten minutes. On the way, slip through a small gate into a quiet courtyard. Spend the morning with art, have lunch on the square and end the day by the River Spaarne.

Hidden story

The bells of Damietta

Every evening at nine, two small bells start ringing in the tower of the Great Church. They recall a city in Egypt.

Read the storyHide the story

The two bells are called the Damiaatjes, the little Damiettas. Every evening between nine and half past nine they ring, as they have done for centuries. Once, the sound told people that the city gates were closing. The name comes from Damietta, a port in Egypt besieged by crusaders in the early thirteenth century. According to Haarlem legend, a heavy iron chain blocked the river, and a Haarlem ship with a saw fixed to its bow cut straight through it. Whether that really happened is doubtful: an eyewitness account of the crusade does not mention the men of Haarlem at all. Still, the story turns up all over town, and although the gates are long gone, the bells still ring.
