The story of Den Haag

The Hague is a city of government, justice and great art. Girl with a Pearl Earring hangs a few minutes' walk from the central station. And when you have seen enough, the tram takes you straight to the beach.

For museum lovers, The Hague is surprisingly compact. The Mauritshuis, the Prison Gate and the old streets around the Hofvijver pond sit almost side by side. A little further out is the Kunstmuseum, home to the largest Mondrian collection in the world, and Panorama Mesdag, where you stand in the middle of Scheveningen as it looked in 1881. In between you stroll along Lange Voorhout and Noordeinde, past palaces and galleries. Start early with Vermeer, take a slow lunch in the centre and keep the afternoon free for one more museum or a walk to the sea.

Hidden story

The tongue of Johan de Witt

A museum collection in The Hague holds a human tongue. It is more than three centuries old, and it once belonged to the most powerful man in the Dutch Republic.

Read the storyHide the story

In 1672, the Disaster Year, the Republic was attacked on all sides and the people wanted someone to blame. Cornelis de Witt was locked up in the Prison Gate, accused of plotting against William III. On 20 August his brother Johan, Grand Pensionary and for years the leading statesman of the country, came to visit him. An angry crowd gathered outside. It forced its way in, dragged the brothers into the street and killed them there. Their bodies were mutilated and pieces were carried off as souvenirs. A tongue and a finger survived and are now part of the collection of the Haags Historisch Museum. At the Prison Gate you can still see where the story began.
