Cameramuseum Zierikzee

Where the Entire History of Photography Lives Under One Roof

In the historic heart of Zierikzee, the Cameramuseum is one of the most unique and surprising museums in the Netherlands — the only museum of its kind in the country, and a place that takes visitors on a complete journey through the art, science, and history of photography, from the very first experiments with light and image to the digital revolution of today.

The museum was born out of a personal passion. In 1977, photographer Bob Noomen settled in Zierikzee and began collecting old cameras and photographic equipment with the conviction that this craft deserved to be preserved. Joined by two fellow collectors, Frans Oostelbos and Arend Lind, he founded the Cameramuseum in 2010, with a mission to safeguard and celebrate the technical and artistic heritage of photography in the broadest possible sense. After reopening in 2022 at a new, larger location on the Korte Sint Janstraat, the museum now spreads across three floors and is bigger and more comprehensive than ever.

A Collection of Over 4,000 Cameras

The collection is genuinely impressive. More than 4,000 cameras — from magnificent antique wooden models of the nineteenth century to sophisticated modern digital equipment — trace the full technical evolution of the medium in extraordinary detail. But the Cameramuseum is far more than a display of objects. What sets it apart is its commitment to storytelling, presenting photography not as a dry inventory of apparatus but as a living craft filled with human stories, technical ingenuity, and moments of genuine wonder.

Every aspect of the photographic process finds its place here. The darkroom, the studio, stereoscopic photography, projection, 3D imaging, and the Zeeland photographers who shaped local visual culture across the generations all feature in an exhibition that rewards curious exploration at every turn. The museum’s collection is so highly regarded that it regularly loans authentic cameras and equipment to film and television productions — among them a famous Dutch series on Johan Cruyff, and a feature film about the life of Bertolt Brecht requiring cameras from the 1930s.

Step Into a 1910 Studio

One of the most memorable experiences the museum offers is the chance to be photographed in a faithfully recreated studio from around 1910, dressed in traditional Zeeland costume, exactly as Zierikzee’s own photographers would have worked more than a century ago. It is a rare and personal souvenir, and one that brings the history of the medium to life in a way that no exhibition panel alone ever could.

An audio tour, available since 2023, guides visitors through the collection at their own pace. Whether you arrive as a seasoned photographer or simply someone curious about how images came to shape the way we see the world, the Cameramuseum offers an adventure well worth taking the time for.
