Museum Goemanszorg

Where Zeeland’s Rural Past Comes Back to Life

On the edge of Dreischor, one of the most beautifully preserved ring villages in Zeeland, Museum Goemanszorg occupies a magnificent eighteenth-century farmhouse that is a national monument in its own right. Since 1996, this historic property has served as the regional and agricultural museum of Schouwen-Duiveland, bringing to life the story of an island shaped by the land, the water, and the people who worked both across the centuries.

Wandering through Goemanszorg is like stepping back into the world of a Zeeland farming family around 1900. The farmhouse is furnished with extraordinary authenticity: a formal parlour, a cosy kitchen, an original sleeping alcove, a cellar still lined with preserving jars, and the distinctive opkamer that was the pride of every prosperous Zeeland household. Lifelike figures populate the rooms, bringing the daily rhythms of rural life vividly back to the present.

A Land That Grew, Drowned, and Rose Again

The large exhibition barn tells a broader and more layered story. Under its roof, the exhibition Land in Motion traces the agricultural history of Schouwen-Duiveland across the centuries, an island that was poldered, flooded, and reclaimed time and again, whose farmers experienced both periods of remarkable prosperity and years of bitter hardship. The cultivation of flax and its transformation into linen, the central role of the working horse before the tractor changed everything forever, and the famous madder plant, whose roots were once processed into the vivid red dye that made Zeeland wealthy and earned it the nickname of the red gold of the province, all feature prominently in a collection that is as rich as it is surprising.

Upstairs in the barn, a vast array of historic agricultural tools and implements fills the space, while a continuous video presentation on flax processing adds a living dimension to the exhibits. In the garden, old farm machinery, fruit trees, an herb garden, and even a small vineyard, planted in collaboration with a local wine estate, extend the experience beyond the building itself.

A current exhibition explores the rise of Zeeland wine, tracing how winemaking has found a new and increasingly confident place on the island in recent years, a reminder that Zeeland’s agricultural story is far from finished.

With its museum café, its terrace, and its warm, unhurried atmosphere, Goemanszorg is one of those places that rewards a slow visit and leaves you with a genuine sense of connection to the land and the people of this remarkable corner of the Netherlands.
