The story of Zierikzee

In the Middle Ages Zierikzee was one of the richest towns in Zeeland, thanks to salt, madder and its harbour. What remains is a compact town with three old gates, hundreds of listed buildings and a church tower that was never finished.

Zierikzee is on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. By public transport take the train to Goes and then the bus, or the bus from Rotterdam. Historic boats of the Museumhaven Zeeland lie in the Oude Haven. The Stadhuismuseum shows the town's history in the old town hall with its elegant tower. For technology lovers there is the Camera Museum. Then walk to the Dikke Toren and along the canals to the Zuidhavenpoort and Noordhavenpoort. Eat mussels or oysters from the Oosterschelde, just around the corner.

Hidden story

The night of 1953

In a single night almost all of Schouwen-Duiveland was flooded. A museum in four caissons tells the story.

Read the storyHide the story

On the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953 a severe storm hit the North Sea, right at spring tide. Dykes in Zeeland, South Holland and Brabant gave way. More than 1,800 people died, and Schouwen-Duiveland was hit hard. The breach in the dyke at Ouwerkerk was later closed with huge concrete caissons. Four of them now house the Watersnoodmuseum (Flood Museum), about fifteen minutes from Zierikzee. The disaster led to the Delta Works, which protect Zeeland today.
