The story of Hoorn

Hoorn was one of the six chambers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Ships left this harbour for Asia, and one voyage even gave its name to Cape Horn. The Golden Age facades are still here, around the Roode Steen and the inner harbour.

Hoorn is approx. 35 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. From the station it is a fifteen-minute walk to the Roode Steen, the square with the Weigh House and the Statenlogement of the Westfries Museum. The museum is being renovated and is expected to reopen in mid-2027; check its website for the latest. The Museum of the 20th Century fills two old cheese warehouses on the Bierkade. Then walk to the inner harbour, with the Hoofdtoren and the statues of Bontekoe's ship's boys. In season, a heritage steam tram runs from Hoorn to Medemblik. Hoorn also has a difficult side: on the Roode Steen stands the statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, which has been the subject of public debate for years.

Hidden story

The ship that exploded, and the book everyone read

Captain Bontekoe survived the explosion of his own ship. His account became a bestseller.

Read the storyHide the story

Willem IJsbrantsz Bontekoe was born in Hoorn in 1587. In 1619 he sailed for the East Indies as skipper of the Nieuw Hoorn. Off Sumatra the cargo caught fire and the ship blew up. Bontekoe survived, as did part of the crew, and after a gruelling voyage in open boats they still reached Java. His account of the journey was published in Hoorn in 1646. It became one of the most widely read books of the century, with dozens of reprints. In the 20th century Johan Fabricius turned it into the children's book The Cabin Boys of Bontekoe, later also a film. The three boys now stand in bronze on the inner harbour.
