The story of Rotterdam

On 14 May 1940 the centre of Rotterdam was destroyed by bombing. Instead of rebuilding the old city, Rotterdam chose something new. That is why it is the architecture city of the Netherlands today.

Cube Houses, the Erasmus Bridge, the Markthal: you walk from one icon to the next. Rotterdam is also a port city, the largest in Europe, and you see and feel it everywhere. The museums match that character: bold, big and innovative. From the mirrored Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen to Fenix, the museum about migration in an old harbour warehouse.

Hidden story

The house that stayed standing

On 14 May 1940 the city centre burned down. One white building by the Oude Haven simply remained standing.

Read the storyHide the story

The Witte Huis (White House) was built in 1898 and, at around 43 metres, was one of the tallest office buildings in Europe. It is often called Europe's first skyscraper. During the 1940 bombing almost everything around it disappeared. The Witte Huis survived, one of the few buildings in the inner city that did. Stand by the Oude Haven and look up: you see the Rotterdam of before 1940, right in the middle of the city that came after.
