The story of Leiden

Leiden is home to the oldest university in the Netherlands and the birthplace of Rembrandt. Behind its canals and almshouses lie museums full of Egyptian temples, dinosaurs and science. And everywhere you look, students are pushing their bikes.

Few cities pack as many museums into so small a space as Leiden. The National Museum of Antiquities, Museum De Lakenhal, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave and the Hortus botanicus all sit in the old centre, a short walk from each other. From the station you cross the heart of town in about a quarter of an hour, past the Rapenburg canal and the Pieterskerk. Between museums you can climb the Burcht or have coffee by the Nieuwe Rijn. Pick two or three museums and leave the rest of the day to the canals.

Hidden story

The tulip thieves of the Hortus

The tulips that colour the Netherlands today first bloomed in a university garden in Leiden. And they were soon stolen.

Read the storyHide the story

In 1593 the botanist Carolus Clusius came to Leiden to run the new university garden. He was already an old man, and he brought a remarkable collection with him, including tulip bulbs from the Ottoman Empire. He planted them in the Hortus and in his own garden, and in 1594 they flowered. Clusius wanted to study the bulbs, not hand them out. That only made people want them more. In the years that followed, hundreds of bulbs were stolen from his gardens, and so the tulip spread across Holland. Today the Hortus has a garden showing how it looked in his time.
