The story of Zandvoort

Zandvoort is Amsterdam's beach: half an hour by train and your feet are in the sea. But the village has a story too, from fishermen and beachcombers to bathers and racing cars. And in the dunes next door, European bison roam.

From Amsterdam Centraal the train runs directly to Zandvoort aan Zee in approx. 30 minutes, and from Haarlem in approx. 10 minutes. The station is close to the beach. The Zandvoorts Museum shows how the fishing village became a seaside resort. The Juttersmu-Zee-um shows everything the sea washes up, and what beachcombers did with it. Circuit Zandvoort lies in the dunes, with Formula 1 on its calendar. North of the village begins Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, where bison, Highland cattle and Konik horses graze.

Hidden story

The lost village by the sea

During the war much of old Zandvoort was demolished. Not by bombs, but for a wall.

Read the storyHide the story

During the Second World War the German occupiers built the Atlantic Wall along the entire coast, a line of defences against an Allied invasion. In Zandvoort that meant hundreds of houses, hotels and villas on the seafront were torn down, and residents had to leave their village. Bunkers, anti-tank walls and minefields appeared. After the war Zandvoort was rebuilt, with a modern promenade. That is why you see few old buildings by the sea. The Zandvoorts Museum and the dunes still hold traces of that time.
