The story of Zandvoort is one of extraordinary transformation. What began as a modest, often harsh fishing village grew over two centuries into one of the most popular seaside resorts in Europe, attracting over five million visitors a year and becoming home to a Formula 1 racing circuit known the world over. The museum traces every stage of that journey, from the fishermen’s wives mending nets on the beach and the first bathers arriving by horse-drawn carriage, to the glamour of Empress Sisi’s famous walks along the shore, the German bunkers built in the dunes during the Second World War, and the thundering rise of motorsport that put Zandvoort on the global map.

The Life of Memories

At the heart of the museum is its permanent exhibition, The Life of Memories, a quietly powerful exploration of Zandvoort’s collective heritage told through the objects and personal stories of the people who have lived, worked, and holidayed here across the generations. Each object on display carries its own story, and it is the interaction between those objects and the human memories surrounding them that gives the exhibition its warmth and depth. History here is not a fixed past preserved behind glass — it is something living, felt, and passed down from generation to generation.

Alongside the permanent collection, four temporary exhibitions run throughout the year, ensuring that every visit holds something new. The current Kunstlogies exhibition brings paintings from the Amsterdam Museum’s collection to Zandvoort, placing Old Masters and contemporary works in dialogue with the town itself — including a remarkable painting by Cornelis Springer from 1863 capturing the village church in extraordinary detail. A film installation on the permanent display, winner of the Silver Screen Award at the US International Film and Video Festival in 2020, explores the enduring relationship between Zandvoort and the sea in a way that is as visually compelling as it is moving.

With guided tours, lectures, creative workshops, heritage walks through the old village centre, and a learning programme for primary schools, the Zandvoorts Museum is as much a living community space as a place of preservation — a museum that belongs to its town, and that invites everyone to be part of keeping its story alive.
