The story of Zeeland

Zeeland is land and water intertwined. Middelburg was home to the second chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and Vlissingen was the birthplace of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Everywhere, museums tell how Zeeland fought the sea, and in 1944 for its liberation.

Middelburg is approx. 1.5 hours by train from Rotterdam. The medieval abbey in the centre houses the Zeeuws Museum, with tapestries, traditional dress and the wealth of the Golden Age. Fifteen minutes away lies Vlissingen, with the MuZEEum about life at sea and De Ruyter's statue on the promenade. In Nieuwdorp, the Liberation Museum Zeeland tells of the battle for the Scheldt in 1944. The foot and bike ferry from Vlissingen to Breskens takes you to Zeelandic Flanders, where Aardenburg still has traces of a Roman fort.

  • 1602the Zeeland chamber becomes the largest of the VOC after Amsterdam
  • 1944Walcheren is flooded in the battle for the Scheldt

Hidden story

The island flooded to set it free

In 1944 the Allies bombed Walcheren's own dykes. It was the key to the port of Antwerp.

Read the storyHide the story

In the autumn of 1944 the Allies held the port of Antwerp, but ships could not reach it: the Germans controlled the banks of the Western Scheldt, with heavy batteries on Walcheren. To get at them, Allied aircraft bombed the sea dyke at Westkapelle in early October, and later other dykes too. Seawater poured in and most of the island flooded. Landings and heavy fighting followed. By early November Walcheren was liberated and the Scheldt could be cleared. Repairing the dykes and the land took years. The Liberation Museum in Nieuwdorp tells the story.
