The story of Zaanse Schans

The Zaan region was one of the world's first industrial areas, powered by hundreds of windmills. At the Zaanse Schans they still turn. And in Zaandam stands the wooden cottage where the Russian tsar Peter the Great stayed in 1697.

From Amsterdam Centraal the train takes approx. 12 minutes to Zaandam and approx. 17 minutes to Koog-Zaandijk. From there, walk across the bridge to the Zaanse Schans: wooden houses, working windmills and craft shops. The Zaans Museum on its edge tells how the region grew rich on windmills, shipbuilding and factories such as Verkade. In Zaandam itself you can see the Czar Peter House, a simple wooden cottage inside a stone shell. Come early in the day; the Schans is very popular.

Hidden story

The tsar who wanted to be a carpenter

Peter the Great came to Zaandam incognito to learn shipbuilding. It did not stay secret for long.

Read the storyHide the story

In 1697 a large Russian embassy travelled through Europe. The young Tsar Peter came along under an assumed name: he wanted to learn shipbuilding, and the Zaan region had the best shipyards. In Zaandam he lodged with the smith Gerrit Kist, who had worked in Russia before. He did not stay long: the curiosity of the locals became too much, and he moved on to Amsterdam, where he worked at a VOC shipyard. The wooden cottage survived. In the late 19th century Tsar Nicholas II had a stone shell built around it to protect it.
