The story of Dutch Names Around the World

Dutch sailors, merchants and mapmakers left Dutch names all over the world. Harlem, Brooklyn, New Zealand, Cape Horn: behind each name lies a place in the Netherlands and a story of discovery, trade and sometimes conquest.

Most of these names date from the 17th century, when the VOC and the WIC sent ships across the globe. Some places were trading posts, others became colonies, where local people and enslaved people paid a high price. Today those places tell their own stories, and Dutch museums increasingly tell them from both sides. The map shows where the names are. The map shows 28 places, from New York to Japan and Australia. Hidden story

How Breukelen became Brooklyn

A quiet village on the river Vecht gave its name to one of the best-known neighbourhoods in the world.

Read the storyHide the story

In the 17th century Dutch settlers made their home across the river from New Amsterdam. They named their village Breuckelen, after Breukelen between Utrecht and Amsterdam. In 1646 it was granted town rights by the West India Company. When the English took New Netherland in 1664, New Amsterdam became New York, but Breuckelen stayed and slowly turned into Brooklyn. The real Breukelen is still peaceful: a village on the Vecht with country estates, meadows and a station half an hour from Amsterdam.
