Roermond
An old Meuse town with a cathedral and plenty of work by Pierre Cuypers, who lived and worked here.
Route by public transport ↗The white town of the noble ladies.
1 museumsThorn is white, quiet and surprisingly grand. For centuries this village on the Meuse was a principality of its own, ruled by an abbess. You can still read that history in every street.
An abbey was founded here at the end of the tenth century, and a tiny state grew up around it that only vanished with the French. The abbey church still stands in the middle of the village, with a Baroque interior you would not expect. The centre is small: in a quarter of an hour you have walked every cobbled lane, past white façades and little squares. Take the train to Weert or Roermond, then the bus. Start at the church, have lunch on a terrace, and stroll out to the Chapel under the Lindens late in the afternoon.

The women of Thorn Abbey took no vows of obedience. They could even buy their freedom.
Thorn Abbey began as a convent, but early on it became a chapter for women from the high nobility. These ladies took no lifelong vows and insisted they were not nuns. They lived in their own houses around the church, with servants. In the eighteenth century they were, in principle, required to live in Thorn all year, apart from six weeks. Yet anyone who wished could buy her way out for 600 guilders. Many did, and some belonged to several abbeys at once. Meanwhile the abbess ruled as princess of a small state within the Holy Roman Empire.
