In the middle of Arnhem stands a house covered in grinning devils. For centuries, locals whispered that its owner had made a pact with the Devil.
In the sixteenth century the Duivelshuis, or Devil's House, belonged to Maarten van Rossum, the feared commander of the Duchy of Guelders. He had it substantially rebuilt in the 1540s. Satyrs were carved on the façade: horned figures that people soon took for devils. Van Rossum was notorious for his raids, so the folk tales wrote themselves. The city bought the house in 1828 and turned it into the town hall soon after. In September 1944 captured British paratroopers were held in its cellar. The bullet holes from those days are still visible in the walls.
