Where Four Hundred Years of History Meet the Open Water

Rising out of the IJmeer just a short ferry ride from Amsterdam, Forteiland Pampus is one of the most extraordinary and atmospheric destinations in the Netherlands. An artificial island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a place where four centuries of Dutch history are written into every stone and sandbank — the journey to reach it, by traditional ferry from Muiden or Amsterdam IJburg, is part of the experience from the very first moment.

The island’s story begins long before the fort itself was built. For centuries, the Pampus sandbank was one of the most strategically significant points on Amsterdam’s seaward approach. Trading ships returning from the Dutch East Indies, laden with spices, silk, and tea, were often too heavily loaded to clear the shallow waters and sail directly into port. They would anchor off Pampus and wait, sometimes for days — giving rise to the Dutch expression “stuck at Pampus,” still used today to describe someone who has fallen asleep.

A Fort Built to Defend a City

Construction began in 1887 as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a 135-kilometre ring of fortifications designed to protect the capital through a combination of heavy artillery and the deliberate flooding of surrounding polderland. Completed in 1895 and garrisoned by around two hundred men, the fort served through the First World War before aerial warfare rendered it obsolete. The military abandoned the island in 1933.

Today, the fort’s walls, moat, ramparts, and underground chambers are all open to visitors. An interactive self-guided tour leads through the island’s layered history, while a virtual hot air balloon flight over the entire Defence Line offers a breathtaking sense of the scale of this UNESCO-listed landscape. The pavilion terrace, with its sweeping views over the IJmeer, and a rich programme of seasonal events — from Pirate Week to a Light Festival in October — make Pampus as much a living destination as a historic one.
