The story of Drenthe

Drenthe is the land of the dolmens, the tombs of the first farmers. But it also has a remarkable World Heritage Site: the Colonies of Benevolence, where poor city families had to build a new life two hundred years ago.

Drenthe is best explored from Assen, by bus or by bike. In Borger stands the largest dolmen in the Netherlands, with the Hunebedcentrum next to it. In Schoonoord, the open-air museum Ellert en Brammert tells of life on the Drenthe heath. In Frederiksoord, Museum De Proefkolonie shows how the first Colony of Benevolence began, and in Veenhuizen the National Prison Museum tells what came next. Art lovers head to Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde, close to Groningen. Between them all lie village greens, open fields and endless cycle paths.

Hidden story

The general's colonies

A general wanted to solve urban poverty by turning poor families into farmers. On the Drenthe heath.

Read the storyHide the story

In 1818 General Johannes van den Bosch founded the Society of Benevolence. The idea: poor families from the cities would get a cottage, a plot of land and work, and so learn to support themselves. In and around Frederiksoord came the first "free" colonies, with strict rules, a school and a church. Veenhuizen got "unfree" colonies for beggars, orphans and vagrants, with large institutions. Later Veenhuizen became a prison village, which it partly still is. In 2021 the Colonies of Benevolence, together with Wortel in Belgium, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
