The story of Twente

Twente was once the "Manchester of the Netherlands", full of cotton mills and weaving sheds. When the textile industry disappeared, the factories stayed. Today they house museums, studios and homes. Under the ground lies another treasure: salt.

Enschede is Twente's largest city, approx. 2 hours by direct train from Amsterdam and Utrecht. In Enschede you will find Rijksmuseum Twenthe, with art from the Middle Ages to today, and De Museumfabriek, about technology, nature and the region's textile history. The local train quickly takes you to Borne, where the Bussemakerhuis shows how a textile manufacturer lived, and to Delden, with the Salt Museum. Almelo has its own town museum. Between the towns lie estates, fields and wooded farmland, perfect for cycling.

Hidden story

The white gold under Twente

Deep under the meadows lies a salt layer millions of years old. Salt is still extracted from it today.

Read the storyHide the story

Millions of years ago a shallow sea covered this area. When it evaporated, it left a thick layer of salt, which later ended up deep underground. In the late 19th century drillers in Twente struck that salt. In the early 20th century extraction began: water is pumped into the ground, dissolves the salt, and the brine is brought back up. The brine is turned into table salt, and also into raw material for the chemical industry. Cycle through Twente and you will see small well heads here and there in the landscape. The Salt Museum in Delden tells the whole story.
