The story of Alkmaar

On Friday mornings, cheese is still carried and traded on the Waagplein, as it has been for centuries. But Alkmaar is more than cheese. In 1573 the town held out against the Spanish army: "Victory begins at Alkmaar."

Alkmaar is approx. 35 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. From the station you walk into the old town in ten minutes, with canals, almshouse courtyards and the Grote Kerk. The Weigh House holds the Dutch Cheese Museum; from April to September, the cheese market fills the square in front on Friday mornings. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar shows the town's Golden Age and, of course, the siege of 1573. Beer lovers have the National Beer Museum in an old brewery by the canal. Come on a Friday in season, or around 8 October, when the town celebrates its Relief.

Hidden story

Victory begins at Alkmaar

The town flooded the land to drive off an army. Every 8 October it still celebrates.

Read the storyHide the story

In August 1573 a Spanish army under Don Fadrique laid siege to Alkmaar. Haarlem had fallen shortly before after months of siege, and Alkmaar seemed next. The townspeople and a small garrison beat back several assaults. Meanwhile, on the rebels' orders, dykes were cut and sluices opened, so the land around the town flooded. For the besiegers the position became impossible. On 8 October 1573 they withdrew. It was the first time a town in Holland had withstood a Spanish siege, hence the saying "Victory begins at Alkmaar". Every year on 8 October Alkmaar still celebrates its Relief, with a parade and a party in the streets.
