The story of Marken

For centuries Marken was an island in the Zuiderzee. Its wooden houses huddle together on man-made mounds, the werven. At the end of the dyke stands a lighthouse.

Marken shows how people lived with the water: houses on mounds, on stilts and pressed together for shelter. The Marker Museum tells the story of the fishermen, the traditional dress and daily life on the island. Only since 1957 has a dyke linked it to the mainland. The bus leaves from the back of Amsterdam Centraal (IJzijde) and takes approx. 35 to 45 minutes. Start at the museum, walk out to the lighthouse and, in season, take the boat to Volendam.

Hidden story

The monks of the Kerkbuurt

Long before the fishermen, Marken belonged to monks. Their monastery stood where the church is now.

Read the storyHide the story

Around 1200, Marken became an island as the Zuiderzee washed away more and more land. In the early 13th century, monks from the Frisian abbey of Mariëngaarde acquired it. They built dykes and put their monastery on a man-made mound, the Monnikenwerf. They kept cattle and horses there. Around 1345, Count William IV of Holland ended it all, in revenge after his defeat at Stavoren. The monks were captured and the monastery destroyed. The Monnikenwerf is now called the Kerkbuurt, and it is home to the Marker Museum.
