The story of Arnhem

Arnhem sits where the Veluwe forests meet the Rhine. It is home to the largest open-air museum in the Netherlands, an art museum overlooking the river and the bridge from the Battle of Arnhem. You can get to know it in a few days, and it stays with you.

Few cities have this much green so close to the centre. In the north you can walk from Sonsbeek Park to the Netherlands Open Air Museum, where farmhouses, windmills and workshops from across the country have been rebuilt. The old town is compact: from St Eusebius' Church to the Rhine quay is a few minutes on foot. Reminders of September 1944 are everywhere, from the John Frost Bridge to bullet holes in old façades. Start with a museum, have lunch on the Korenmarkt and finish with an evening stroll along the river.

Hidden story

The house of devils

In the middle of Arnhem stands a house covered in grinning devils. For centuries, locals whispered that its owner had made a pact with the Devil.

Read the storyHide the story

In the sixteenth century the Duivelshuis, or Devil's House, belonged to Maarten van Rossum, the feared commander of the Duchy of Guelders. He had it substantially rebuilt in the 1540s. Satyrs were carved on the façade: horned figures that people soon took for devils. Van Rossum was notorious for his raids, so the folk tales wrote themselves. The city bought the house in 1828 and turned it into the town hall soon after. In September 1944 captured British paratroopers were held in its cellar. The bullet holes from those days are still visible in the walls.
