Island guide

Vlieland

One village, no cars, plenty of quiet.

The story of Vlieland

Vlieland has just one village, and visitors are not allowed to bring a car. You arrive by boat from Harlingen and get straight on a bike. After that the island is yours: woods, dunes and a beach that seems to go on for ever.

Vlieland is small, but its past lies close to the surface. At Tromp's Huys, the oldest building on the island, you hear about whalers, the lost village of West-Vlieland and the treasure ship Lutine. At De Noordwester you see what lives in the North Sea and on the mudflats. You can walk round Oost-Vlieland in a quarter of an hour, and by bike the dunes are minutes away. Start in the village, cycle up to the Vuurduin and finish on the beach.

Hidden story

The village under the sea

Vlieland once had two villages. The larger one now lies under water, somewhere off the west coast.

Read the storyHide the story

In the seventeenth century West-Vlieland was a prosperous village, with a church, a town hall, a school and a windmill. Around 1670 some two thousand people lived there, far more than on the whole island today. They made their living from whaling and the Baltic trade. Then things went wrong: plague, privateers from Dunkirk and a sea that kept taking land. By 1736 only two houses were left. Oost-Vlieland survived as the island's only village. You can find out more about the lost village at Tromp's Huys.
