The story of Texel

Texel is the largest of the Wadden Islands and only a twenty-minute crossing from Den Helder. It has seven villages, wide beaches and a sea full of shipwreck stories. Here you see how islanders lived for centuries off whatever the water brought them.

On Texel everything turns on the sea, and the museums show it. At Kaap Skil in Oudeschild you stand over a huge model of the roadstead where hundreds of ships waited for the wind in the seventeenth century. At Ecomare near De Koog you watch seals and learn how the dunes and the mudflats work. Distances are short: by bike you get from one village to the next in about half an hour. Start at a museum, cycle over the Hoge Berg and end with fish by the harbour.

Hidden story

Europe's last battlefield

While the rest of the Netherlands celebrated in May 1945, Texel was still at war. The story begins with Georgian soldiers in German service.

Read the storyHide the story

In 1945 a battalion of Georgians was stationed on Texel: Red Army prisoners of war forced to serve the Germans. When they heard they would be moved to the mainland, they rose up on the night of 5 to 6 April. They killed hundreds of German soldiers in their sleep. German reinforcements arrived and the island became a battlefield. The lighthouse was badly damaged and many islanders lost their lives. The fighting went on until 20 May, more than two weeks after the rest of the country was liberated. Hundreds of Georgians lie buried in their own cemetery on Texel.
