Museum Valkhof

Where Two Thousand Years of History Meet Contemporary Art

Perched on the edge of the Valkhof Park in Nijmegen, with sweeping views over the river Waal and the bridges that have defined this city’s skyline for generations, Museum Valkhof is one of the most compelling cultural destinations in the eastern Netherlands. Born in 1999 from the merger of two distinguished institutions, the G.M. Kam Museum of archaeology and the Commanderie van St. Jan museum of art, it brings together under one roof a collection that spans more than 14,000 years of human history, from prehistoric finds to contemporary expressionism.

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, and that extraordinary heritage is felt at every turn inside the museum. At the time of the Romans, Nijmegen stood on the Limes, the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, a boundary now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum holds the finest collection of Roman archaeological finds in the country, including the celebrated Nijmegen Helmet, weapons, everyday objects, and treasures that bring the daily life of a Roman frontier city vividly back to life. Walking through these rooms, centuries collapse and what once seemed impossibly remote suddenly feels immediate and human.

Art and Archaeology in Dialogue

What makes Museum Valkhof genuinely distinctive is the way it refuses to separate history from art. Alongside the archaeological collections, the museum presents a rich and colourful gathering of old master paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and silverware, as well as a vibrant modern art section featuring Pop Art and contemporary expressionism from 1960 onwards, with works by both Dutch and international artists. The Valkhof Castle of Charlemagne, whose ruins still stand in the park outside, threads through the collection as a constant point of reference, a reminder that this city has always stood at the crossroads of power, culture, and civilisation.

Temporary exhibitions on art, history, and science rotate throughout the year, ensuring that every visit offers something new alongside the permanent collection. Guided tours are available on request, and the museum café, with its views over the park and the river, offers a perfect place to pause and reflect on everything you have just encountered.

In a city as layered and historically rich as Nijmegen, Museum Valkhof is the place where all those layers are made visible, legible, and deeply worth exploring.
