A Time Journey Through 750 Years of the City
Opened on 27 October 2025, exactly on Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, Amsterdam in Motion is one of the most ambitious and immersive cultural experiences the city has ever seen. Housed in the Zuiveringshal Oost, a former industrial purification hall in the vibrant Westergas cultural park, the space itself sets the tone for something genuinely out of the ordinary.
Curated by the Amsterdam Museum, Amsterdam in Motion was conceived as a birthday gift to the city, a living, breathing tribute to 750 years of history, ambition, and reinvention. From the moment you step inside, the experience makes clear that this is not a conventional museum. It is something you see, hear, and feel.
The World’s Largest Multimedia City Model
At the heart of Amsterdam in Motion is its centrepiece: the world’s largest multimedia scale model of a city. Spanning 200 square metres at a scale of 1:1300, the model features 30,500 buildings placed by hand, recreating Amsterdam in extraordinary detail, from the Vondelpark to the harbour. During a breathtaking 15-minute show, immersive projections, animations, and a powerful sound system transform the model and the surrounding walls into a panoramic spectacle, taking visitors on a journey from Amsterdam’s origins as a small village on the Amstel in 1275, through its Golden Age, and all the way to the metropolis of tomorrow.
An Exhibition That Goes Deeper
One floor up, the experience continues with an interactive exhibition exploring the themes that make Amsterdam what it is today: housing, migration, nature, daily life, fashion, and the story of Ajax. Each installation invites visitors to engage, reflect, and discover hidden stories of a city that has never stopped evolving.
Amsterdam is continuously in motion, driven by the dreams of the people who live, work, and visit here. Today’s choices, however small, shape the city of the future, and Amsterdam in Motion makes that idea feel immediate, tangible, and deeply personal. An experience that is as relevant for Amsterdammers as it is unmissable for visitors from around the world.
